The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” — Matthew 13:44.

Burying valuables in the ground to protect them was a common practice at some places in ancient times because there were no banks!

Jesus presents the radical nature of discipleship. Knowing Jesus and being in the kingdom is everything. Salvation is a free gift by God’s grace and paid for by Him. However, it costs the disciple everything (see Matthew 10:34-39; 13:46).

Jesus made known the hidden things of the kingdom by parables (v. 35), but they remain hidden for most people, who cannot see their value. But like the man who finds treasure or the trader in pearls (verses 45,46), those who do perceive the value of the kingdom will sacrifice anything to obtain it (Phil. 3:8).
