Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities.
2 And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 3 and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” — Matthew 11:1-3.
Now Herod had imprisoned John because he had declared that Herod’s relationship with his brother Philip’s wife was adulterous (14:3, 4). While in prison, John heard about the messianic deeds of Jesus. He had predicted that the Coming One would bring judgment, chopping down the trees of wickedness (3:10, 12). He believes that the Anointed One would be a great political ruler, a king, or a mighty military leader. But Jesus is preaching the advent of the kingdom and healing people! He is insisting that the poor and the meek are blessed! He even allowed His own forerunner, John, to be imprisoned by the wicked Herod. John may have reached a state of discouragement, even questioning if Jesus was the Christ.
So he sends two of his disciples with the questions:-
Jesus, are you the one? Are you really the Son of God? Or should we look for someone else?
Jesus’ reply will be in the next post : Jesus Answers John.
