And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” John 6:35.

Absence of food and drink weaken our bodies. We eat and drink to sustain our bodies.

Bread comprises of bread and other nutritious, wholesome food. They provide energy to and maintain our bodies. Our bodies can go further with the right nutrition. Food provides our bodies with vitamins, nutrients and energy needed to function properly. Without food we would die. Wholesome food fill our stomachs, satisfy our hunger and energize our bodies.

Water aids in digestion, helps remove waste, keeps the body hydrated, protects our tissues, spinal cord, and joints.

Besides nutrition and fluid for the physical body, we need spiritual food and drink for our souls. Our souls are energized and properly maintained with the intake of spiritual food and drink. Without spiritual sustenance, we would become weak, shrivel up, and eventually die spiritually.

Jesus presents Himself as the bread of life – our nourishment. There are two essentials involved in receiving what Jesus is offering. Coming and believing. We have to come to Jesus. We have to believe in Jesus. We come to Jesus when we believe in Him. Coming to Jesus does not mean coming to Him for what He gives. We come to Him because He is the bread of life. He is not giving the bread, He is the bread. Jesus is the bread given by the Father to the world. Very often we come to Jesus for what He can give us, not because of Who He is. Those who believe see Jesus as the bread of life. We come to Him as our satisfaction.

When we see Jesus this way, we will not come to him to satisfy our desires. We will come to him because He alone satisfies our spiritual hungering and thirsting. Nothing else satisfies us. Nothing – money, family, power, health, desires, or anything else – compares to Jesus. He came to be our bread and for us to receive Him as our bread for our spiritual satisfaction. Everyone can be satisfied by Jesus.

Worldly, carnal offerings cannot satisfy. Only Jesus is all-satisfying. Jesus is truly bread and He has offered Himself free to us. May we stop laboring for the bread that perishes. Coming to Jesus and believing in Him causes us to experience transformation of heart, mind, and life. Our joy is in Christ alone!

Hear the LORD’s invitation in Isaiah 55–

1 “Ho! Everyone who thirsts,
Come to the waters;
And you who have no money,
Come, buy and eat.
Yes, come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
3 Incline your ear, and come to Me.
Hear, and your soul shall live;
And I will make an everlasting covenant with you—
The sure mercies of David.”
