“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. -– Matthew 5:14-16.
Jesus stated that His followers were lights in the world. This meant that the world was in darkness! The world is indeed in spiritual darkness, engrossed in itself. What is this world and how is it in darkness? How are we to shine before this dark world? The world is the human environment (family, society, etc.) where we live. It is too engrossed in itself. It is full of hatred, jealousy, strife, murder, etc. Selfishness is the root cause of all these dark and negative attitudes and actions.
Examples: Jesus uses two examples to drive home the point of how His followers should shine.
- As a city set on a hill: This city cannot be hidden and acts as a beacon to all in the surrounding area since it is visible from a distance.
- As a lamp on its stand: This lamp gives light to all who are in the house. A lighted lamp hidden under a basket would fail to serve its purpose.
Application: Let your light be seen through your right attitudes and actions which transform into good works; love and goodwill towards all in your environment (family, society, etc.). This will cause those who see you to know that you are followers of Jesus, expose their “darkness”, and cause them to glorify your Father in heaven.
