Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12.
The life and teachings of Jesus shine brightly as light in a dark [carnal] world. His life shines as a light in the darkness [mental / spiritual] and dispels it.
Jesus makes a powerful declaration about Himself in John 8:12, “I Am the light of the world.”
Consider the following passages:
The Psalmist declared, “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” — Psalm 27:1a.
The Prophet Isaiah prophesied,
“The sun shall no longer be your light by day,
Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you;
But the Lord will be to you an everlasting light,
And your God your glory.” — Isaiah 60:19.
The Apostle John, describing the New Jerusalem said, “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.” – Revelation 21:23.
Thus we understand that the Lord Jesus Christ was always presented/projected as the light – the everlasting light.
To truly follow Jesus means to walk in His footsteps on the path He has established by the light He shines through His life, examples, and words. His followers have the light of life, Jesus Himself, to light the way. Being in Jesus, we possess the light. Since we are in a relationship with Him, we are anchored in and bound to Him! We are true followers only when –
- We follow Him where He goes;
- We believe what He teaches;
- We do what He says.
Jesus is the true light. Without Jesus we cannot see anything in life properly. We cannot see ourselves properly. We cannot have a right view of God. We cannot understand what we truly need. When we are in the dark we yearn for light. Jesus is that light for true life in the world. When we are in the dark, we must follow the light to have any direction. When we are without power, we need light to get around. We need Jesus as the great light / beacon to guide us along life’s highway because without him we are walking in total darkness.
Let us follow the Light of the world so that we may truly have the light of life.
